Almost 530 days ago we published the first app on theIRapp platform. This August, as we continue to publish apps for dozens of the world’s largest companies, we’re helping IROs reach their audiences across 103 countries where investors are consuming thousands of pages of critical documents.

As you’ll see below, our apps have been used almost 500,000 times over the last year alone. That’s a number that amazes us, and this month we’re taking a look at just how far our IR apps are reaching. We know that the mobile revolution is fully underway and that mobile devices are where most of us are consuming our information. Theses devices are becoming more engrained in our daily lives as we move away from using mobile browsers to access corporate websites and turn to the efficient native app experience.

theIRapp is not the only one looking at app numbers. As you’ll see this month in a guest blog from eMarketer.com, it turns out that people are getting 43% of their media from digital sources – and this year mobile has edged out the desktop computer as the primary platform for content consumption.

This month we rolled out version 5.0 of theIRapp and introduced a first for the IR app industry: live-streaming of video and audio. Time spent with video-enabled apps has grown 166% since 2011 – a growth rate twice the 71% increase in time spent watching YouTube on the desktop. Live streaming of audio and video via mobile is a very important step toward capturing and retaining the attention of an audience. The ability to stream live content demonstrates the real power of the native app as a communications platform, and something not available through a mobile optimized website.

The Monthly Download: By the numbers

Some 18 months ago we submitted the first IR app to Apple’s App Store for approval. Two weeks later, when we downloaded that first app onto our iPhones, we knew we were on to something big. Today the global reach of theIRapp extends across the globe. We have grown to have six IR app partners in Africa, Brazil, the Netherlands and Belgium, Israel, Canada and Australia/New Zealand. We are also proud to hold out international companies, PR Newswire and American Stock Transfer as our partners in the U.S. No matter what stock exchange a company is listed on or the language that a company’s investors speak, IROs are acknowledging that theIRapp platform is an easy to implement, turnkey and cost effective solution to reach their key stakeholders.

App successes are measured in numbers, so we wanted to share some empirical data on what we are seeing. The numbers and infographic below are only relative, however, to the fact that IR apps are still a relatively nascent category in IR communications:

Mobile Views: More time on our phones

How much time exactly are we spending on our mobile phones? This month we share eMarketer’s first-time break out of time people are spending on tablets and smartphones compared to desktop computers. Turns out, most of us are getting almost half of our media from digital sources, and most of the time that source is our mobile device! US Time Spent on Mobile to Overtake Desktop

Mobile has become so key to consumers’ lives that for the first time this year, time spent on nonvoice mobile activities will surpass time spent online on desktop and laptop computers, eMarketer estimates.

US adults will spend 43.6% of their overall media time with digital this year, including 19.4% on mobile-compared to 19.2% on laptops and PCs. Time spent with mobile phones and tablets, excluding voice calls, has risen from 13.4% of all media time last year, and has nearly tripled since 2011.

eMarketer’s estimates of time spent with media include all time spent within each medium, regardless of multitasking. Consumers who spend an hour watching TV while multitasking on tablet devices, for example, would be counted as spending an hour with TV and an additional hour on mobile.

With this free app available in the Apple App Store and in Google Play, investors are able to receive push notifications when new content is added to theIRapp, add events to their calendars, share content as well as download content for offline viewing.
