NIRI 2017: Do We Still Need to Convince You Mobile is THE Way?

In a world where people are increasingly becoming dependent on their mobile devices, it makes sense that we find ways to utilize these devices for just about every aspect of our lives. The numbers are staggering – people are now spending over 5 hours/day on their mobile devices according to the latest reports.  However, according to the latest BNY Mellon Global Trends in Investor Relations Report, only 11% of publicly traded companies had a dedicated IR app in 2015.

We are now attending the NIRI National conference for the 6th year in a row.  Given that the IR industry has been slow to embrace the importance of having a mobile IR communications strategy, one might ask why we continue to do so.  The answer is simple.  We are determined to demonstrate to the IR industry (of which I have been a part of as a consultant for the past 20 years), that it’s OK to embrace new ways of communicating even if investors aren’t demanding it.  Another reason we attend is to see many of our clients – some of the finest public companies in the world – who have embraced mobile as an additional way to be proactive and transparent in their communications.  If you have never downloaded an IR app, go to the Apple App Store or Google Play and search for Colgate Palmolive, Seagate Technologies, Philip Morris and Duke Energy’s IR apps.

Last year in San Diego, an IR professional approached me interested in what we were doing at theIRapp.  After I showed her how theIRapp works, she said to me, “why do I need one of those if I have an IR website that can be viewed on my iPhone?”  My response was as follows:

  • A native app is software developed specifically for the Apple and Android operating systems – it provides for a better user experience, just like software is developed for desktop computers.
  • It’s proactive. You add content and it pushes directly to your investors’ mobile devices without them having to do anything – one would think that your investors would be willing to download your app if their investment was significant enough.
  • Every investor of yours has a mobile device. Most probably have 2 or more.
  • What’s wrong with taking advantage of different ways to market your company especially when the price is right.

Well, I can honestly say that the conversation didn’t end as I would have hoped.  In fact, I still feel frustrated by it.  But we are now one year later and I can confidently say that mobile technology not only is here to stay (over 77% of Americans now own smartphones), but will continue to become more powerful and important in the way work is done.
